Language people!

Dear interweb,

did you notice that I write to you in English? Do you know why I do that? Because some couple of hundred years ago, people noticed that a lot of countries speak/understand this language. After that, "they" decided that it would be the number 1 used language in the world. The second most used language is Spanish, but we are not talking about that.

Lately I've been hearing some words in my native language, Dutch, and they sounded odd to me. The reason for that, is because those words were literally translated from English! If your basic English is good enough to have conversation and read papers, then you will notice.
Below I made up a list of some of those words I heard lately...and their counterparts, for my fellow Dutch speakers.

acquireren=to acquire: verwerven
desperate=desperate: wanhopig
exceptie=exception: uitzondering
initieren=to initiate: aanvoeren of ter sprake brengen
propositie=proposition: voorstel
superviser=supervisor: toezichthouder
switchen (pronounced swishen)=to switch: veranderen

Now, after you finished reading (and perhaps checked the net): don't start bashing me! I know some words are already commonly used and 2/3 or them are based on words from the French language.
I'm not a teacher with a degree in Dutch, English or French nor am I a linguist.
