Languages

Dear interweb,

let me tell you about my Saturday. Since I was young, I got in contact with languages from different groups: some were from the Romance family and others from the Germanic family. Later on, in high school, I developed some sort of talent for reading/speaking different languages. I was very bad with Spanish, scoring below average, but had no real trouble understanding it. English and France were just in my system, it felt good finishing those tests.

Lately there are some songs online from the South African Zef rap-rave group called "Die Antwoord", which is "The Answer" in English...but also it sounds like broken Dutch. While checking out their clips (Zef Side, Enter the Ninja) and trying to listen what they rap about, I found some words that are almost the same in Dutch.
So last night I was at my sister's and we looked up Afrikaans on the interweb (that is you). Some words sound really weird, but if you can understand basic Dutch you can see how they came up with it. Some examples:

deurmekaarspul - chaos
hofsaak - rechtszaak (legal proceedings)
fok - having intercourse (f*ck in English, and the streetvariant in Dutch is also fok)

And what a coïncidence: that night the movie "Blood Diamond" was on the tele and in that movie, if you listen closely, you can understand some Afrikaans words that are also Dutch.

Just go check out the clips, look up some Afrikaans and you get back to me.

Peace...and out,
Shade
